External Studies Basic for Grades 1–4

External Studies Basic is an assessment-focused format for a family that plans to organise most learning independently.

What is included

• Core learning materials and tests.
• One online class review with a teacher in each subject per semester.
• One comprehensive annual assessment in each subject, due by the end of the second semester.
• Individual support from the class curator.

The option to complete two or more grades in one year is available. This is not automatic: the school must confirm whether it is appropriate for the pupil and explain the required learning and assessment plan.

Important to understand

External studies are not simply a cheaper version of daily online school. The family and pupil carry more responsibility for planning, preparation and meeting assessment requirements. For a younger child, that usually requires consistent adult involvement.
